Robert Louis Stevenson once said, “wine is bottled poetry.” In that vein, I’d like to recite a poem about wine…*achem:
Roses are red,
Wine is also red,
Poems are hard,
Wine.
That’s probably not what Stevenson had in mind, but I’m sure you see the point.
Wine has a rich, complex history that is full of interesting facts. For instance, did you know:
- Bumping glasses with a “cheers” dates back to old Rome as a technique to ensure someone wasn’t trying to poison another (the bumping often resulted in some of your wine spilling over in my glass and vice versa)
- During the U.S.’s Prohibition era, grape juice manufactures took advantage of “thirsty” Americans by placing labels on their products “After you mix the concentrate with water, please do not keep the mix in a barrel for 20 days – as it will turn into wine.”
- The wreck of the Titanic holds the oldest wine cellar in the world, and despite the wreck the bottles are still intact.
All of this talk about wine is making us thirsty. What about you? How about we continue the conversation next Thursday. Say, 6:30 p.m. at Uncorked Tasting Room and Wine Bar?
